23 February – 09 March 2019
The International Summer Academy of Music is two week intensive workshop that fosters a unique work environment for our chosen composers. Away from the everyday distractions of life, our composers come together to live, eat, sleep and work in a collegiate setting designed to spark creativity and develop close bonds outside of an educational institution.
During the Academy the composers will have daily mentoring sessions with Ofer Ben-Amots and Jan Jirásek – alternating between the two. These sessions are aimed at bringing out the best of each composer and guiding them in their journey to create a new work for the resident ensemble.
Professional Rehearsals and Performance
In the second week the new pieces are workshopped and rehearsed by the resident ensemble. This gives our composers a chance to test ideas, push boundaries and get a practical understanding of what is achievable within a tight deadline. It also provides an opportunity to work with professional musicians who are experts in their field.
The final works are then performed in the Gala Concert in front of a live audience. The performances are recorded so our composers leave with two tangible outcomes – a completed score and a recording by professional musicians.
Composers are also invited to enter their new works in to the Noosa ISAM participants competition.
We will all be staying in the lovely South Pacific Resort. This special place embodies the relaxed and casual lifestyle of Noosa. Participants will share apartments with a kitchen lounge room, bathrooms and laundry. There are tennis courts, pools and a lush tropical environment to compose in. The resort is opposite the stunning Lake Weyba and close to everything Noosa has to offer- Noosa Heads’ main beach and Noosa River with kayaks, boats and surf boards available.
We are inviting local indigenous and non indigenous composers and musicians to the Academy to give demonstrations and talks. More of this will be posted closer to the date. To stay up to date with our latest news subscribe to our FOLLOW LATEST NEWS VIA EMAIL section on the left of this page.
Testimonials – Previous ISAM Participants
Ellen Sargen – UK. In my acceptance letter onto the ISAM masterclass, composer Ofer Ben-Amots had highlighted specific aspects of my writing style that he identified would profit from development, and upon presenting a draft of Aperture in our first lesson at ISAM, both he and Jan (Jirácek) tailored their teaching to these aspects in our daily forty minute one-on- one sessions, significantly contributing to the way I now consider form and development in my writing. I was awarded third prize in the Josef Dorfman Memorial Competition for Aperture, which was premiered on the final day of the course by the NotaBene chamber ensemble. ISAM was invaluable in its contribution to my wider identity as a composer, allowing me to network internationally with other musicians at similar stages in their development, work with an international ensemble, and attend countless concerts within the ongoing festival in the town. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience, and hope to work again with the musicians I met during the course; the warm and welcoming atmosphere of ISAM meant we were able to form strong relationships amongst one another, and prosper musically from each other’s advice and friendship. I have also been able to use my professional recording of Aperture for my own promotion as a composer, something that is difficult to come by in the early stages of one’s career.
Polina Korobkova – Russia. My experience in ISAM 2017 was fantastic! Perfect teachers, super-friendly atmosphere and a beautiful place to live in. Just in two weeks I’ve written a whole quartet. Moreover, it was performed by professional musicians, who specialise in contemporary music. I think it’s a very cool place to meet people and work on your professional skills
